Our Story

Paewai Shearing is based in Broken Hill, we are committed to the harvesting of wool clips for Wool Growers in this area, and outlying regions.

We are also committed to the employees of Paewai shearing and work hard towards the goal to provide year round employment for the current work force we have.

Paewai Shearing has evolved from Silver City Shearing which was established in January 2011, taking over from an already existing and well established shearing run from former and very experienced operator Tim Walter (Walter shearing). Although the experience gained in this industry comes for us from New Zealand, we have been working in this area for the last 27 years and have a good knowledge and understanding of the Broken Hill region and the people.

We come from two generations of shearing contractors, my father and his three brothers had a large operation, known as the Paewai Partnership consisting of 6+ shearing teams employing approximately 80 – 90 employees, in the southern hawkes bay, which is situated on the south east coast of the north island in New Zealand. Operating from the 60s through to the 90s having 30+ years of experience under their belts they purchased several properties and decided to try life on the other side of the fence as farmers.

Tiratu Station is a property that was purchased from the efforts of the Paewai Partnership business, my father still farms this property today.

The generation before them was Lui Paewai who also spent time as a shearing contractor, we know our grandfather not so much for his contracting skills, but for his rugby career, he was the youngest player to play for the All Blacks (New Zealands national rugby team).

Hopefully some of these skills and experience might be used to support those who choose to forge a living out of this industry, and those livings associated with it.

Our Long Term Goal

To become the best at what we do, we believe that we must surround ourselves with the best people the industry has to offer, this is not an easy task, but it is one of our main areas of focus.

The work force

to create that elete work force, you must find those individuals that have the right attitude, in an industry that would seem attitudes is one of the main problems, there are individuals out there that do want to work, and that do want to get along with others, and that will allow themselves to become part of a team.

Unfortunately from time to time we have tried unknown individuals to see if they are suitable for our operation, only to find they are not.

We have since then included the signing of an employment contract to adhere to the policies of Paewai Shearing, which has the effect of culling the undesirables before they become employed.

The Growers

The other area we focus on is to find those wool growers that are good operators, they are easy to work for and with, they provide good facilities for us to stay in and a work place that is safe and of a reasonable level for us to do our job. Once again in our travels amongst the property’s one thing we notice good people are always easy to work with, and we are happy to say we have lots of them.

The future

In an industry that seems to be declining in standards and principals, we would be concerned about the future and what things will be like in 10 years from now, we feel if we can maintain a high level of standards, we might be able to preserve a quality and respect that is needed to get the job done.
